because it is easier to come up with a random number as the key to everything, rather than accept the realization that life is little more than what you put into it.
It's from a book/movie called "The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy". Basically, these people ask a super-computer what the answer to life, the universe, and everything is, and the computer takes a million years to think about it, and when they come back the computer says the answer is 42. I know it doesn't make sense, it's not really supposed to. But it is a good movie, I think. Why do some people say that 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everyhing?
When Douglas Adams wrote Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, he was thinking about the famous ROOM 42 of the Egyptian Antiquities Museum in Cairo, which is where the aritfacts from the IVth Dynasty are kept. The Fourth Dynasty is called "the Pyramid Age" because that is when the three main pyramids on the Giza Plateau were built.
It was a game in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy called the 42 Puzzle. The answer to the puzzle was 42 but there was no question... or something like that. Why do some people say that 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everyhing?
No, it's 3.

3 days without water.
3 weeks without food.
3 months without sex.
Read the Hitch Hikers Guide to the galaxay and the books that follow. It's just a somewhat funny answer that some author thought up :)
